Rangers FC were close to landing former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel during the summer transfer window but somehow the move collapsed.
And now reports in Turkey are claiming that the Gers manager will go back for Skrtel during the January transfer window.
Martin Skrtel currently plays for Turkish club Fenerbahce but the 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season meaning he can holds talks with other clubs at the start of the new year.
While Rangers haven’t been given much hope of signing the centre-back but many feel that Steven Gerrard holds the key.
Gerrard and Skrtel have obviously worked with each other during their time at Liverpool and the Teddy Bears are hoping that their manager can use this influence to lure Martin Skrtel into Ibrox.
Rangers have signed the likes of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson during the summer transfer window but Steven Gerrard still needs one experienced defender – one who will help him see out those high profile games.
The Gers have signed Gareth McAuley on a free transfer but the former West Brom man is far off from being fully fit and the fans have doubts as to whether the senior pro will actually be any use to Steven Gerrard.
Martin Skrtel’s agent had said during the summer that the defender would be honoured to play under Steven Gerrard and the Rangers hierarchy are hoping that this interest is still sparkling come January.
Martin Skrtel joined Liverpool during the 2007-08 season from Zenith St Petersburg and went on to play 320 games for the Anfield outfit.
It was finally in the summer of 2016 that Martin Sktrel left the Premier League side to join Fenerbache for a reported fee of £5 million.
