Man United are reportedly looking at this 29Y/O La Liga keeper as Onana’s replacement: Is this the right move?

Andre Onana has had a mixed first season with Manchester United and as per Marca, the club might be planning to replace him with Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro.

Erik ten Hag dumped David De Gea because he wanted a keeper who is good with his feet which is why Andre Onana was brought in from Inter Milan. However, the Cameroonian keeper has conceded 55 goals in 35 Premier League games this season and even though Onana’s distribution has been good, his shot-stopping abilities have been very flawed.

Despite his average performances, Andre Onana has been a regular feature under ETH but if reports are to be believed then the club is looking to dump him after just one season in order to cut down on their losses.

United are said to be keeping tabs on Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro whose contract with the club expires in 2027 and it has a €70 million release clause which the Premier League side will have to trigger to be able to sign him. Manchester United will look to hold negotiations to lower this fee but with three years still left on his contract, we doubt if Sociedad will be eager to give any major discounts.

Should Man United dump Andre Onana and spend money on Alex Remiro?

Manchester United had paid €50 million to sign Andre Onana on a five-year deal and even though he has been very average this season, there’s no way they will want to sell him off after just one campaign.

Alex Remiro is a Bilbao youth product who joined Sociedad in 2019 and since then, he has played in more than 200 games for the club. The 29-year-old is undoubtedly a very good goalkeeper but his stats for the current season are not too better than Andre Onana.

Unlike Onana who has kept 8 clean sheets in the league, Remiro has kept 13 in the La Liga but both of them have equal shots saved percentages at 71.4%. Remiro has a better long-ball accuracy at 47% over Onana’s 33% but both of them have failed to save a single penalty this season.

Andre Onana has prevented an average of 2.5 goals per match while the Sociedad man has prevented 0.92 per 90 minutes.

Alex Remiro has been far better in helping to build play from the back but then again, the backline in front of the Manchester United keeper has been constantly changing this season. Varane and Martinez were supposed to be the two first-choice central defenders but the pair have hardly played together this campaign.

To conclude, yes, Andre Onana has clearly failed to replicate the form from Inter Milan but it makes no sense to spend €70 million on a goalkeeper who has very similar stats to the 28-year-old. Man United have to strengthen several positions in the summer and finding a new No 1 is way down their priority list right now.
