Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has played only a handful of games this season but according to Rio Ferdinand, the midfielder’s time is effectively up at the club.

The 33-year-old has played in 14 Premier League games this season and has a rating of 6.99 out of 10 but he’s not a regular starter and as per Ferdinand, his age is something that is turning out to be a big hindrance for the Serbian.

Ferdinand said on FIVE: “Very good footballer, simple, understands the role really well, covers spaces, physical enough, big enough to handle the physical demands. I really like him and respect him as a player.

“He’s at the wrong end in terms of age. He’s got until the end of this season and I’d be surprised if he’s in the squad next season just based on the age of what he is and where he is in his career, but he is a great servant to football, great player.”

Will Nemanja Matic be sold by Manchester United?

The defensive midfielder has been with Manchester United since 2017 but when he joined United, the Serbian was already on a downfall.

He never managed to get his career kick-started at Old Trafford and while he is good in substitute appearances, there’s no way he can play week in week out.

He played 24 minutes against Atletico Madrid and then he also played against Watford and in both those matches, Man United looked much more in control of the midfield. But sadly, he won’t be able to sustain this type of performance for prolonged periods.

Manchester United are planning to sign a new defensive midfielder during the summer meaning there will be no use of Nemanja Matic next season. The 33-year-old earns £120,000-per-week so by selling him United will also be able to free their wage bill.

United have players like Fred and McTominay as backups and if they can sign a player like Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips then there’s no need to hold onto Nemanja Matic.
