UEFA – the governing body of football in Europe have finally made the decision to introduce VAR in the Champions League.
VAR was used with unanimous success during the recently concluded World Cup in Russia after which all the fans wanted urged UEFA to incorporate VAR in the Champions League and its other European tournaments.
Finally, UEFA have decided to take that step forward and introduce VAR in the Champions League from the 2019-20 season.
Along with the Champions League, the system will also be used in the 2019 Super Cup and at Euro 2020.
While Champions League will get the luxury of VAR from the 2019-20 season, the Europa League will only get the technology in the 2020-21 season followed by the 2021 Nations League finals.
Apart from the UEFA, a number of other European leagues are also in the process of introducing VAR as the English FA is currently testing the technology during its Carabao Cup games which are being held in the Premier League grounds.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said: “We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition.”

The introduction of the VAR in the Champions League will surely be a positive step towards the betterment of the game as many top European clubs have been pushing the envelope for Video Assistant Referees for a number of a number of seasons.
