Liverpool news: Vidic on Torres
Nemanja Vidic

Fernando Torres left Atletico Madrid at the end of last season and currently plays for J League side Sagan Tosu.

Torres is easily one of the best strikers that the Premier League had seen during the past decade with the former Liverpool and Chelsea scoring more than 100 goals in England’s top tier.

Fernando Torres joined Liverpool in 2007 from Atletico Madrid and went on to play 142 games for the Merseyside outfit.

The striker was the pin-up boy for Liverpool during that period and many believe that if he had a better team around him then Liverpool would have managed to lift the Premier League trophy.

But apart from scoring goals, Fernando Torres achieved nothing with the Reds eventually moving to Chelsea in 2011.

And it was at Stamford Bridge that the 34-year-old won three major trophies.

Many defenders will tell you that Fernando Torres was a nightmare to defend against and one player in particular who had real trouble playing against the striker was former Man United defender Nemanja Vidic.

And now talking about Torres, Nemanja Vidic has revealed why it was so hard to defend against him.

“Torres was a top player,” he said.

“At the time, he was probably the best striker in the league. He scored a few goals against United.

“In the Premier League, I had some good games against [Didier] Drogba, sometimes bad.

“I played well against Torres one week, then one game bad, that’s the Premier League. You’re not going to be on top of your game every week.

“It’s why I like the Premier League. In one game, you’re going to be against a strong player like Drogba, the next it’ll be a Torres or [Sergio] Agüero.

“If people see me live, they say, ‘I thought you were much bigger!’ I was never big, but I gave everything in challenges.

“It’s why I never got bigger because I knew the next week I’d have Torres or Aguero, so I never spent as much time in the gym as you have to adapt to players.”
