The German magazine Der Spiegel has once again shocked the footballing world by releasing a set of documents which talks about the much-hyped European Super League.
And ever since the documents were revealed, the footballing world has been sent into a frenzy.
The leaks about the European Super League has shaken up the footballing world and even FIFA has scampered to release a statement bringing down the rebel league.
What is the European Super League?
The concept of a European Super League consisting of the richest football clubs from across Europe has been discussed from the 1990s and has occasionally been officially proposed, but the idea has not yet got off the ground.
In 1998, Italian company Media Partners seriously investigated the idea. The plan died after UEFA moved to expand the Champions League competition and abolish the Cup Winners’ Cup in order to better accommodate clubs that were considering defecting in order to join the proposed Super League.
Who are the advocates of the European Super League?
Perhaps the biggest name to have backed the European Super League is Real Madrid president Florentino Perez who in 2009 backed the idea of a super league where in the big European teams got to play against each other on a consistent basis.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had also predicted that within this decade the European Super League would turn into a reality.
In 2016, even UEFA the governing body of football discussed about having a creating a closed league containing the 16 best teams in European football from the highest ranked national leagues.
But nothing had quite materialized yet.
Why is there such a sudden hype?
According to the documents leaked by Der Spiegel on Friday, the European Super League could turn into a reality by 2021.
‘A draft of a “binding term sheet” sent on 22 October 2018 by the firm Key Capital Partners to Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, appears to show the English clubs would be joined by Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Milan as founding members with a further five clubs – Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Marseille, Internazionale and Roma – appearing as “initial guests”.’ – as reported by the Guardian.
