UEFA Champions League

UEFA have finally made a decision to resume the Champions League as well as the Europa League during a committee meeting on Wednesday.

The UEFA president had already hinted that the two tournaments are likely to be finished in the month of August since they are not too eager to cut short the qualifying rounds for the 2020-21 season.

And now the governing body of football in Europe has officially announced the new schedule and the venues for the remaining matches in the Europa League and the Champions League.

When will the Champions League resume?

The Champions League will be back in action from August 7th with all the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final matches set to be played Lisbon, Portugal, in a knockout fashion.

The official statement read: “The 2019/20 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played as a straight knockout tournament in Lisbon, Portugal in August. All these ties will be single-leg fixtures.

“A decision is pending on whether the four remaining round of 16 second legs will take place at the home team’s stadium or in Portugal.”

Which are the venues for the UCL?

The matches from the next rounds will be played in two stadiums in Lisbon, Benfica’s Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting CP’s Estádio José Alvalade.

If the remaining Round of 16 games cannot be played as per the normal format, the Estádio do Dragão stadium in Porto and the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques stadium in Guimarães will host these matches.

2019/20 UEFA Champions League schedule:

7-8 August: Round of 16 second legs (venues to be confirmed)
12-15 August: Quarter-finals (Lisbon)
18-19 August: Semi-finals (Lisbon)
23 August: Final (Lisbon)

All fixtures will kick off at 21:00 CET.

This is a massive boost for all the clubs still alive in the Champions League as they will not only get a chance to win silverware but will also benefit hugely from the cash inflow if they can progress to the next rounds.
