SPFL sides Celtic and Rangers have both been linked with Peterborough United forward Ivan Toney over the past few weeks.

The forward has been in peak form for the League One club so far this season, scoring 24 goals in just 32 matches for the club and according to Noel Whelan, the 24-year-old will be a fine addition to either of the two Glasgow sides next season.

Whelan told Football Insider: “The big difference is going to one of the top two sides.

“He will get more chances, that goes without saying. Celtic and Rangers possess a lot of quality players and they are a lot better than the rest of the Scottish Premiership.

“He knows where the goal is – he is a goalscorer. Newcastle would not have bought him unless he had some sort of quality but it just did not work out for him at Newcastle.”

“But are either willing to pay £15million? I would suspect that they are only going to be able to put forward that kind of money on the back of Morelos or Edouard leaving.”

Will Ivan Toney play in Scotland next season?

The price tag of Ivan Toney is undoubtedly a major problem since the club have made it clear they will not let the forward leave this summer if their demands are not met.

Club owner Darragh MacAnthony told Peterborough Today: “All five of us at a meeting to discuss players for next season (Fry, co-owners Darragh MacAnthony, Dr Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson, plus manager Darren Ferguson) agreed that Ivan would be sold, but only for the right price.

“If that doesn’t happen we will keep him and we will sell him in January.

“Obviously we expect him to go in the summer because his talent demands that clubs will bust a gut to get him, but we will see how it pans out. If he did go the money we would receive would get us through next season.

“We are currently working on replacements for Ivan and we might have to sign two players to replace him properly.”

Also, West Bromwich Albion is another club who are one of the favourites to sign Ivan Toney this summer and if the Baggies can manage to secure promotion to the Premier League then there’s every chance the Northampton-born man could remain in England beyond the summer.
