Rangers FC have gone through a couple of seasons of turmoil but are now finally climbing their way back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

But now a report has emerged which is sure to infuriate the Light Blues fans.

Former Scottish FA president George Peat has revealed that a club chairman asked him not to help Rangers when the Gers were facing a fixtures backlog back in 2008.

Rangers were playing in as many as three fronts at the end of the 2007-08 season and ended up playing five games over 11 days.

And that pressure did not go down too well with the Ibrox outfit given that they lost the UEFA Cup final to Zenit St Petersburg and finished second in the league but ultimately won the Scottish Cup.

And now Peat has revealed that a club chairman had phoned him up during that period asking him not to provide any support to Rangers which the then chairman obviously refused.

“The prominent club asked me not to and I refused,” Peat told BBC Scotland.

“There were certain things that disappointed me. One, in particular, disappointed me.

“I remember when Rangers got to the final in Manchester. I got a phone call from a prominent chairman of a club requesting me not to help Rangers in any way.

“And it so happened that I had already had a meeting with Lex Gold at the SPL because what we were willing to do was to extend the season because of the fixture pile-up that Rangers had and I was most disappointed when I got back to the office to receive this call to ask me not to help them in any way.

“That really stuck in my throat.”

Rangers are currently fourth on the league table – seven points adrift the top spot but right now they are concentrating on their Europa League clash vs Villarreal while Celtic will take on Rosenborg in their Europa League game at home.
