Scottish Premiership side Rangers FC have managed to sign goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin as a free agent, despite interest from Celtic FC.

Jon McLaughlin played in 32 League One games for Sunderland this season, managing to keep 11 clean sheets and his contract with the English side expired this summer.

The official statement read: “RANGERS are delighted to announce the signing of Scotland international goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

“The 32-year-old has chosen to join the Gers on a two-year-deal after deciding to leave Sunderland.”

Now according to a report by Football Insider, Celtic FC have tried to sign the 32-year-old but eventually, McLaughlin chose to join the Ibrox outfit.

The report claims: “Rangers sealed the signing of Jon Mclaughlin after late interest from Celtic, Football Insider has learned.

“A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Rangers finalised the deal only following a last-gasp swoop by their Glasgow rivals.

“By that point, the deal was already in the bag and McLaughlin was announced after putting pen to paper on a two-year contract. Celtic’s interest came amid doubts over the make-up of their own senior goalkeeping roster for next season.”

Many people have been wondering why Jon McLaughlin would choose to join Rangers when he had the chance to move to Celtic and win trophies next season.

Well, the first big reason is that if the Bhoys do manage to get back Fraser Forster from Southampton then there’s no way the former Sunderland man will get to play in the first XI.

But at Rangers, there’s still a chance that Jon McLaughlin could grab the No 1 spot from Allan McGregor next season.

Also, there’s still a possibility that it was too late for the 32-year-old to make a u-turn when Celtic came calling for him.
