Tottenham Hotspur are planning to make a move for West Ham United full-back Ben Johnson, as per reports.
Ben Johnson has come up through the WHUFC academy but his contract with the club expires in the summer and talks of an extension seem to have hit a brick wall. The Hammers have offered him a six-and-a-half-year deal but as per reports, the two parties cannot agree on certain conditions.
With the 24-year-old set to be a free agent very soon, Spurs have registered their interest and the transfer experts believe that the club’s ambassador Ledley King has recommended the full-back’s name who also happens to be his cousin.
Will Ben Johnson be a good signing for Tottenham?
Ange Postecoglou is keen to add depth to his full-back positions during the upcoming window and since Ben Johnson can play on either wing, the Spurs manager seems to be keen to bring him on board.
He made his debut for the West Ham United senior side back in 2020 but in these four years, the right-back has not been able to find a consistent spot in the starting lineup. This season, he’s featured in only 10 Premier League games and most of them have been on the bench.
Even if he ends up joining Spurs as a free agent, we don’t see him getting regular starts over Porro or Udogie next season. However, we doubt if he wants to make a switch based purely on football terms
He currently earns £20,000 per week at West Ham and he wants this salary to rise to £60,000 per week under the terms of his new contract. It’s very evident that the Hammers are not ready to pay so much for a utility player but if Spurs are willing to come close then we think Ben Johnson is going to join them, even if that means sitting on the bench for most of the season.
Pedro Porro and Udogie have done a wonderful job this season and it’s very hard to see Ben Johnson take one of their roles.
