Rangers FC are at the front of the queue to sign midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan for the upcoming season, as per journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The youngster joined Chelsea’s youth setup from Rangers in 2017 and after breaking into the first team for a brief period of time, the 20-year-old has been sent out on loan to Norwich City this season.

He will return to Chelsea in the summer and chances are that he will be once again sent out on loan and this time, three major clubs are keeping tabs on him.

Bournemouth and Fulham are the two sides who want to bring him on board but as per O’Rourke, Rangers will have an advantage in this race.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think it will definitely give them an advantage, maybe ahead of other clubs, if Chelsea do decide to loan him out.

“I’m sure Billy Gilmour still has a lot of fondness for Rangers from his time there, and it’s something that he might very much be interested in doing, going back there and proving his worth because they never really saw him in the first team because he left the club at such a young age.

“So, I think it would definitely give them an advantage, but again, as I said, Chelsea will decide what happens with Billy Gilmour in the summer.”

Will Chelsea send him out on loan next season as well?

Chelsea currently have an overload on midfielders and they are also planning to go after Declan Rice which means there’s a very realistic chance that Billy Gilmour will be sent out again.

The youngster needs game time to be able to develop fully so we do not expect him to see in Chelsea colours beyond pre-season training.

His loan spell with Norwich has not been successful as he’s started only 18 league games so far and at the back of these performances, he will not even get close to the Chelsea starting lineup.

Will Billy Gilmour choose a move to Rangers or will he prefer PL football?

Fulham will return to the Premier League next season and even the Cherries should be back with the big boys so Rangers will find it really hard to convince Billy Gilmour to come back to Scotland.

At Ibrox, he will obviously get a lot more game time but the level of competition in the PL is vastly different and if he hopes to play for Chelsea one day then he has to stay in England and compete with the best.

Does Rangers need the services of Billy Gilmour?

GvB will likely lose Scott Arfield and Steven Davis during the summer so the manager has to bring in a new central midfielder at any cost.

Billy Gilmour is a fine talent and he will very easily get into the Rangers first XI so with two experienced defenders leaving, the club can very much do with someone like the Chelsea man.
