Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reportedly wants to sign Chris Smalling from Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

Wenger has gone on record to claim that his club tried signing Jonny Evans from West Brom in January but the Gunners were unable to match the asking price for the centre-back. Now the Daily Star are claiming that the North London club are looking at other options.

The report claims that Wenger wants to sign Chris Smalling in the summer but the defender’s price tag can put off the French manager.

Manchester United have priced Smalling in the region of £25 million which coincidentally is the same amount the Baggies were demanding for Evans.

Wenger is in desperate need of defender for the upcoming season and Manchester United are trying to play to this vulnerability.

Smalling has performed quite impressively this season for the Red Devils but Mourinho should not have second thoughts about letting him move out during the summer. Mourinho already has an array of centre-backs in his squad and parting ways with the English International should not be a major issue for the manager.

Wenger on the other hand, will find it more feasible to go after Smalling rather than chase Evans once again. Arsenal have already failed to sign the defender in Janaury and on top of that they are once again expected to face some stiff competition from Manchester City as Pep Guardiola still hold a substantial interest in the former Manchester United defender.
