Rangers FC had a really poor season last time around but one of the positives that came out of the campaign was Alfredo Morelos.

Alfredo Morelos banged in 18 goals for the Teddy Bears last season and the Colombian has managed to keep hold of the form despite a major reshuffle this summer.

The striker is already up to 15 goals this season in just 23 games despite having Kyle Lafferty as a competition in the team.

And now for assistant coach Jonatan Johansson has revealed how he unearthed a gem and handed it over to the Gers.

Johansson came across Alfredo Morelos while was Finland’s assistant manager and immediately was awestruck by the Colombian’s talent.

“I thought he was different from anything the Finnish league had before – strong, a good target man,” Johansson said.

“He was very – maybe arrogance is the wrong word – but he had that confidence where he just wanted to score goals.”

After watching Morelos play for a couple of times, Johansson left the job with the Finland national team and joined Rangers as an assistant coach under then manager Pedro Caixinha.

And it was then that Johansson convinced Caixinha to scoop up Alfredo Morelos for a fee of around £1 million.

“Pedro was trying to reshape the squad and he gave me a lot of players to watch – different leagues, different types”, he said.

“I felt that Alfredo fitted the profile perfectly. I had very good contacts with HJK, I knew the manager, players and the chief executive.

“I think with every player there are risks and it’s about minimising those risks.

“It’s about doing as much research as possible, to see how he is as a player and speak to coaches and team-mates to get as many opinions on him as possible, find out what he’s like as a person and everything else.”
