Arsenal were expected to make a handful of signings during the January transfer window but all they got was Denis Suarez.

The Gunners lost Rob Holding in December and the defender was ruled out of the season and then Hector Bellerin also suffered the same fate.

So it was a no-brainer that Unai Emery would want to bring a new defender – atleast on loan.

Halfway during the January transfer window, the manager had claimed that the club did not have the revenue to bring in a permanent signing so any player who arrived would be on a loan deal.

But ultimately the club failed to bring in a new defender which has caused a fair bit of stir amongst the Arsenal supporters.

And now football pundit Gary Neville has given the probable reason as to why the Gunners did not sign a defender at the start of 2019.

“We asked this week: Are we surprised that Arsenal didn’t bring in a defender?,” Neville said on Sky Sports(as reported).

“But the problem is, they can’t get the players available.

“They cannot get them. Honestly, it’s a real issue,”

“Clubs are not letting go for normal prices, and clubs are now thinking: Do I go and pay over the odds in January? Am I going to get the player I want?

“I genuinely believed Arsenal would have strengthened more than they have done if they believed something was available.”

While Denis Suarez is undoubtedly a fine signing but Arsenal have been leaking goals in almost every game.

Arsenal have so far conceded 36 goals in the Premier League which is more than any other top-six club. And in order to stop this, Unai Emery badly needed a couple of defensive reinforcements.

But one feels that Arsenal will not be looking to buy any more new players until they can free up cash which can only be achieved when the London outfit dumps high earning players like Mesut Ozil.
