Man United beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Premier League at the start of January and while it was a happy day for the team but for Keith Conway it was one of the worst days of his life.
Keith Conway is a Man United fan who is a season ticket holder at the club was one of the travelling supporters at St James’ Park that day.
And the 57-year-old had been accused of misbehaving and the Newcastle United stewards and also grabbing one of them by the throat.
After an investigation, Conway has been found guilty and has been given a footballing ban.
Prosecutor Claire Irving told the court the 57-year-old had been drinking before the match kicked off at 8 pm.
She said(as reported): “The defendant was drinking and became involved in an argument with a steward who told him to leave the ground.
“As he was being escorted out, his conduct changed, and Conway spat in his face before elbowing him.
“Another steward went to assist and she was grabbed by the throat by the defendant. She kneed him in the groin to get him off.”
Jack Lovell, mitigating, says the football fan was “completely disgusted” by his behaviour and had never caused troubles at any of the previous matches he attended home or away(as reported).
Mr Lovell said: “He states he tried to beat the queues at half-time and was walking down the stairs and knocked into a steward.
“As a result, the steward forms the opinion he has had too much to drink and asks him to leave, and at that time he was fully compliant.
“The stewards decided to restrain Mr Conway, and he started asking why can’t I stay?
“He accepts he swung his arm out and caught the steward with his elbow, and he accepts he would have been shouting and screaming.
“He is completely disgusted by his behaviour. This is certainly out of character for him.”
