Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has been the backbone of the Blues backline for a number of seasons now but this year the English defender has struggled for game time.

Cahill has so far played just one game in the English Premier League under Maurizio Sarri and most of his appearances have come in the Europa League and the EFL Cup.

The Chelsea manager has obviously picked Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz as his first choice central defenders and for a couple of weeks now, there have been rumours that Gary Cahill could be on his way out of the club.

While the club has not officially responded but now the manager has come out to claim that he has no need of Gary Cahill and he is free to leave the club.

“I respect him very much because he has won everything with this club, [but] then I have to do my job,” Sarri said about Gary Cahill.

“Maybe he is the best in the box, but our defenders may play 100 or 110 balls in a match so I need defenders very technically. It is not my decision, but it is up to him and the club.

“For the over-30 [players] the club usually offers only one year of contract. If he has an offer of three years, he can, of course, choose something [else at a different club]. It doesn’t depend if I am sentimental or not.”

This statement is certainly great news for Arsenal who have been looking at Gary Cahill as a possible replacement for Rob Holding who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Unai Emery is reportedly looking at Man United’s Eric Bailly and Gary Cahill as his two top choices but now with the Chelsea defender being available, the Gunners could shun their interest in Bailly.

Gary Cahill is out of contract at the end of the season meaning the Blues will not think one bit before selling him off during the January transfer window.
