After Sven Mislintat left Arsenal, Monchi was supposed to take over the role of the head of recruitment at the club.

But the Spaniard chose to head back to Sevilla for a second spell and now he has revealed why he snubbed the Gunners.

Monchi said: “It[Arsenal] has been the club that has shown the most interest in me but, in the end, I evaluated all of the offers I had on the table and I chose the one that convinced me most.

“I had other options and very important ones that were flashier, but I’ve chosen Sevilla because its sporting project convinced me.”

After Monchi’s snub, Arsenal moved their focus to former Gunners Marc Overmars who is currently the director of football at Ajax.

Overmars spent three years with the Gunners and after retiring he joined the Ajax backroom in 2012 and in all this time he has done some fine job with the Eredivisie club.

Arsenal were hopeful that they would be able to lure away Overmars from Ajax but it looks like one of their former players have also snubbed them.

Marc Overmars has signed a new deal with Ajax which will keep him at the club until 2024.

“There are still plenty of challenges at Ajax and I’m having a good time here,” he said.

“We are taking steps with both the youth academy and the first team. From a sporting point of view, we still want to show a lot.

“What is also important to me is that it’s nice to work with the people around me. I get pleasure and satisfaction from that. “

Two of Arsenal’s top options to replace Mislintat have chosen other clubs over the Gunners which means Unai Emery will have to pull a rabbit out of the hat and bring in someone who can help the London club find some top quality players.
