Mesut Ozil Arsenal team news
Mesut Ozil Germany Arsenal

Germany had a bad performance during the 2018 World Cup and almost every major football pundit was pointing out to the fact of how poorly the team had played.

But clearly, the German press and the fans had other ideas.

When Germany won the 2014 World Cup everyone was raving about the fact that the success was an out and out team performance and no particular player could be singled out.

Fast forward four years and all that team spirit have gone down the drain.

Playmaker Mesut Ozil has been singled out for his poor show at the World Cup in Russia and he has received so much hatred that he has been forced to retire from International football.

Ozil has accused the German board and politicians of racial abuse indicating to the fact that many have cited his Turkish heritage to criticize his performance during the tournament.

And as the whole world was uniting against racism and big footballing personalities were coming together to show support for Mesut Ozil, Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has chosen to go the other way.

Hoeness has claimed that Ozil is trying to hide his years of bad performances behind all this emotional statement and he chose a rather odd statistic to prove his point.

Hoeness told SportBild(as reported by talkSPORT):

“Ozil has been playing s*** for years.

“He won his last tackle before the 2014 World Cup.

“All he is doing on the field is playing cross passes. Now he hides himself and his crap performance behind this photo (the statement).”

While we do not want to indulge into the finer details but one thing we can say with confidence is that Uli Hoeness is simply wrong.

And while mentioning this factually incorrect data, the Bayern Munich president for once did not mention Mesut Ozil’s contributions on the other half of the pitch – the reason why he is picked in any team.

Mesut Ozil is not the first player who has come out to speak about racial abuse and we can assure you he will not be the last. But one thing that really surprises us is the fact that Germany – a team which is famous for playing a ‘team’, has decided to make one single player his scapegoat and that too because of a dual heritage.
