It’s an open secret that Chelsea are trying to sign Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell during the upcoming transfer window.

Chilwell has come up through the ranks at Leicester and this season he has caught the attention of the Blues having put an outstanding shift in each of his outings in the Premier League.

And for the longest time, the Blues were said to be the only club keen to sign the England international. But, as per the latest rumours, Manchester City have also grown a liking towards Ben Chilwell and Pep Guardiola wants to sign him up for the 2020/21 season.

This was a major setback for the Stamford Bridge outfit since Man City have the financial power to pay the £80 million being demanded by Leicester City, plus they are not expected to make too many signings this summer.

But still, there are a couple of reasons why Chelsea could sign the 23-year-old ahead of the Citizens.

Man City not too keen to sign Ben Chilwell:

That’s according to ESPN who are saying that Ben Chilwell is not on the top of Guardiola’s transfer wishlist this summer.

It seems like the City boss is currently more focused on signing a new centre-back before the new season kicks off.

Rob Dawson writes: “Manchester City’s priority in the next transfer window remains bringing a new centre-back to the Etihad Stadium despite monitoring Chelsea’s pursuit of Ben Chilwell, sources have told ESPN.”

UCL a big motivator:

If Chelsea manage to hold onto their Champions League status for the 2020/21 season then Frank Lampard will be able to convince Chilwell to join the Stamford Bridge outfit in the summer.

The Daily Mail claim: “Chelsea are confident they will be able to sign Ben Chilwell from Leicester if they secure a place in next season’s Champions League.”

As things stand, Leicester City will be playing in the UCL next season and there’s no way Ben Chilwell will want to snub that and play in the Europa League for the Blues.
