Young Billy Gilmour was the standout player for Chelsea as the Blues knocked out Liverpool from the FA Cup earlier this week.
The young Scott was deployed in the Jorginho role by Frank Lampard and despite the presence of the likes of Minamino and Sadio Mane, he held the fort brilliantly and was easily the best player on the pitch.
And now speaking about his solid performance, Billy Gilmour has revealed it was Harry Maguire and his bullying back in October which helped toughen him up.
Billy was part of the Chelsea team which faced Man United in the Carabao Cup back in October and it was during this match that youngster learned a lesson or two.
Gilmour said via Metro: ‘He is going to try and bully young ones and that’s where I need to learn in the game – how to be stronger.
‘I’ve been working on that and I can only get stronger. But that was a learning curve, definitely, when he gripped me up in the box. I remember that really well.
‘Basically he was saying I’m a wee guy. He was pushing me off, gripping me by the throat, and that’s something I have to deal with.
‘But I won’t let that happen again, that’s for sure. That was a lesson.’
Is Billy Gilmour the next big thing?
Billy Gilmour gave a great account of himself in midweek vs Liverpool but right now, it’s up to Frank Lampard to use him tactfully.
We have seen many such young players with even more talent fade away just because they had been exposed too much.
Having said this though, the former Rangers man is expected to get yet another start this weekend as Chelsea take on Everton in the Premier League this weekend. Jorginho is suspended for this game while other midfielder’s like Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante are both ruled out with injuries. And possibly this is why Billy Gilmour will have one more chance to showcase his talent against the likes of Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.
