Chelsea are set to play in the Club World Cup, starting next week and as per reports, the breakthrough technology of ‘robot referees’ is going to be used in their game, as per a report in Football London.

The Blues will go directly to the semi-finals of the competition where they will face either Al Hilal, Al Jazira or Pirae and they will become the first Premier League team to experience ‘robot referees’.

What will the ‘robot referees’ do?

The ‘robot referees’ will make automatic offside decisions and as per the report, the decision will be taken within half a second.

How will this technology work?

Special cameras attached to the stadium roofs will create animated skeletons of the players via a process called ‘limb-tracking system’.

The VAR will be informed if there is any offside call and they will, in turn, relay this decision to the on-field referees.

Is this the first time that ‘robot referees’ are being used?

The technology has previously been used in the Arab Cup and FIFA have plans to fully implement the system at this year’s World Cup.

Will this tech be helpful?

It still remains to see how this new technology is going to impact top-tier games which is why Chelsea’s semi-final match could give us a lot of insights.

FIFA though is claiming that the technology is going to provide new insights for coaches, medical staff, and fans.

Before the Blues head to Abu Dhabi, they will play in the 4th Round of the FA Cup where they take on Plymouth Argyle.
