Chelsea suffered a 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday and according to Arsene Wenger, the Blues boss might have made a very average mistake.

According to the former Arsenal manager, Frank Lampard did very little to secure his team’s midfield area and it was one of the main reasons why Bayern Munich ran riot – especially during the second half of the match.

“What has he [Lampard] learned… but he knew already, because you don’t lose five home games if your team is superior to every other team,” Wenger told beIN Sports via Mirror.

“But at that level, to give possession away you’re punished at some stage because they make you run too much, and you cannot survive for 90 minutes.

“In the Champions League, if you lost the midfield you’re in trouble, it’s rule number one. Because you play against good teams, if they can feed the strikers you, at some stage, will pay for it.

“And we’ve all gone through that but when the team is really superior that’s what happens.”

Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho played in central midfield vs Bayern Munich and the two had a really tough time in dealing with the movements of Kimmich and Alcantara.

While Frank Lampard did name Mason Mount and Ross Barkley in his starting line-up as well but the duo did not know what to do for most of the match.

It seemed as if the two were not given the proper instructions which is why for a few minutes, the Chelsea duo were seen helping out in midfield and the very next minute they were trying to close down the Bayern defenders which would then leave huge gaps in the middle of the park.

Chelsea though will have very little time to sit back and analyse their loss since they take on AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League and then they welcome Liverpool in the FA Cup.
