Dedryck Boyata has announced that he will be leaving Celtic this summer in order to join Hertha Berlin.
BBC reported: “Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata will join side Hertha Berlin this summer.
“The 28-year-old centre-back’s contract expires at the end of the season, although Celtic manager Neil Lennon said last month he was hoping a new deal would be agreed.
“Boyata – who was part of Belgium’s World Cup squad last summer – has not played since March because of injury.”
And speaking about the transfer Dedryck Boyata said: “The club is ambitious and has goals that I stand by and I was very impressed by how Michael Preetz tried to talk to me and showed me a clear plan.”
The transfer of Dedryck Boyata will not bring in a single penny for Celtic given that his contract expires this summer and despite numerous bids last summer, the Bhoys refused to sell him off.
And now it looks like the club are paying the price.
James McFadden has also come out to slam the Celtic management for their inability to cash in on Dedryck Boyata and letting him leave as a free agent.
“It’s crazy,” he told Sky Sports(as reported).
“I think in the summer when they were offered £9 or £10 million, they should have taken it because, for me, it’s a lot of money for Dedryck Boyata, knowing full well that he won’t sign a new contract.
“He’s going to run his contract down and leave at the end of the season for free. I think that was part of the frustration that Brendan Rodgers had at the start of the season.
“They should have sold him, taken the money. They were bringing Benkovic in any way as a replacement.
“It was always going to happen. As soon as they rejected that, he made it so public that he wanted to leave, there was no way back for him there, for me.”
