Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has revealed that before he joined the Old Trafford outfit their local rivals Manchester City were also interested in signing him.

Berbatov became a household name in the Premier League when he first arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from Germany. The striker spent two full seasons with the London outfit managing to score 46 goals.

But then he moved to Manchester United during the summer transfer window of 2008 where he spent another outstanding couple of seasons.

Dimitar Berbatov joined Manchester United on deadline day putting pen on paper to a four-year deal at the worth which was worth £30.75 million.

But now the forward has revealed that United were not the only club who were interested in signing him as their neighbours Manchester City were also after him and his manager even tried to convince him to join the Blue Half of Manchester.

And this is what Dimitar Berbatov said in reply“I don’t think it was that close, to be honest. My agent told me about some interest but I said, ‘Don’t even bother mentioning anyone else, I’m going to Man United,’ because of the history, the players, the tradition, everything.

I think it was the night before City signed Robinho from Real Madrid and my agent said, ‘Berba, there’s another team in for you’. I said, ‘F*ck off, we’re going to Man United’. He said, ‘But they’ll give you more money!’

“It’s not all about the money sometimes, though. I was like a horse with blinkers. For me, it was the right decision because going to the top of the mountain was my dream, especially when you come from Eastern Europe, from a small town, and no one’s done it before you. It was a great feeling.”

Dimitar Berbatov ended up winning two Premier League titles during his stay at Manchester United and City eventually signed Robinho after they missed out on the Bulgarian.
