All of the UEFA tournaments have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and this list includes the Champions League, Europa League and the EURO 2020.
At first, UEFA had tried to play the knockout games for the Champions League and the Europa League behind closed doors but soon the situation got out of control after a number of top footballing personalities were tested positive for COVID-19.
On 15th March, UEFA had released a statement wherein they had announced the postponement of all their European games due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The announced: “In the light of developments due to the spread of COVID-19 in Europe and related decisions made by different governments, all UEFA club competitions matches scheduled this week are postponed.
“This includes the remaining UEFA Champions League round of 16 second-leg matches scheduled on 17 and 18 March 2020; all UEFA Europa League round of 16 second-leg matches scheduled on 19 March 2020; and all UEFA Youth League quarter-final matches scheduled on 17 and 18 March 2020.
“Further decisions on when these matches take place will be communicated in due course.
“As a consequence of the postponements, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League quarter-final draws scheduled for 20 March have also been postponed.
“UEFA has invited representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro, to a videoconference meeting on Tuesday 17 March to discuss European football’s response to the outbreak.”
Following this, there were reports that the Champions League and the Europa League finals are scheduled to be held during the final week of June but eventually, these reports have turned out to be false.
And now UEFA have come out with another statement in which they have made it clear that they are yet to decide on a date for the finals.
The statement read: “As a result of the COVID-19 crisis in Europe, UEFA has today formally taken the decision to postpone the following matches, originally scheduled for May 2020:
- UEFA Women’s Champions League Final
- UEFA Europa League Final
- UEFA Champions League Final
“No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates. The working group, established last week as a result of the conference call among the stakeholders of European football, which was chaired by UEFA President, Aleksander Čeferin, will analyse the options available.
“The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course.”
