Rangers FC are on the verge of signing Swedish defender Filip Helander and the deal is expected to be announced any time now.

Filip Helander has come up through the ranks at Malmo and in 2017 he joined his current club, Bologna.

Steven Gerrard’s squad lacked the defensive strength last season and the manager is clearly focusing on bringing in defensive reinforcements this summer.

While some reports have claimed that Bologna will be getting around £4.3million for the transfer of Filip Helander, others though claim, Rangers will not be paying anything more than £3.5 million.

Whatever may be the case, the two parties seem to have reached advanced talks over the transfer and Bologna’s sporting director Riccardo Bigon has confirmed that the transfer should be arranged very soon.

He said: “Yes, we are talking right now about this possible transfer. I can’t tell you any more than that because the discussions are not yet complete.

“But we hope to have an agreement very soon.”

Italian football expert Nima Tavallaey was the first person who broke the news of Rangers’ interest in Filip Helander and now talking to Football Scotland, he has said that the defender could be one of the highest paid players in the current Gers squad.

And he has also gone on to compare the 26-year-old to Man United’s Victor Lindelof.

Tavallaey said: “I haven’t been able to verify the exact sum so therefore I don’t wish to speculate, but I have been able to verify that he will be, if not the highest paid player, then at least one of the top five highest players at the club.

“Rangers difficult financial situation is hardly news and Bologna are now run by Walter Sabatini, one of the best sporting directors in the world when it comes to selling players.

“He is a great negotiator but either way it will require Rangers to be open to paying around €5-6 million in total either in instalments or in add-ons.

“I’m not a big fan of these comparisons at all but with a lot of tongue-in-cheek, I’d say he’s a poor man’s Victor Nilsson-Lindelöf.”
