Rangers FC beat Ayr United in the quarter-finals of the Bretfred Cup and youngster Glenn Middleton was the star of the show for the Light Blues.

Gerrard in a bid to rotate his squad gave the winger a start on Wednesday and the 18-year-old surely did not disappoint his manager.

The Gers won with a scoreline of 4-0 and Glenn Middleton bagged a brace with the other two goals coming from Nikola Katic and Alfredo Morelos.

And speaking after the win, Glenn Middleton revealed that the message from his manager before the game was very simple.

As per the winger, Gerrard had told him: “Just to give the right-back or whoever you’re up against 90 minutes of pure hell, to keep going at them.

“That’s the type of player I am, I’ll always go at someone, that’s what I do.

“I’m not going to say I am the most technical player, I’m just good at one v ones and having an end product.

“I can add bits to my game, which I need to do, but I also need to stick to the stuff I’m good at.”

After the game, Steven Gerrard has also come out to praise the youngster claiming that Glenn Middleton is currently giving him major selection headaches.

But the manager knows very well that this is a problem which he would love to have throughout the season.

Now we have to wait and see if this fine performance against Ayr can give Glenn Middleton a place in the starting line up for the Livingston game this weekend in the Premiership.
