Lucas Torreira

Unai Emery signed Lucas Torreira during the summer transfer window but right now the Uruguay international is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

When Torreira arrived at the Emirates Stadium everyone expected him to become a first team regular straight away but the former Sampdoria man made his debut in September.

During the first couple of weeks, Lucas Torreira only came on as a substitute forcing many to believe that the midfielder was going to make it under Unai Emery.

Some reports had also cited that the Uruguayan was not happy with the lack of opportunities and wanted to move out.

But since then, Unai Emery has put full faith on the player who is currently the fulcrum on which the whole Arsenal team operates.

Due to the introduction of Lucas Torreira players like Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil have been given more license to move forward thus helping the Gunners in attack.

And now after four months, Unai Emery has finally revealed why he chose not to start with Lucas Torreira right from the very first week of the season.

Unai Emery told Marca: “Because you have to respect hierarchies.

“If [Benrd] Leno comes as a signing, but [Petr] Cech is doing well, we have to respect him. Petr was first. And the same happened with [Matteo] Guendouzi and Torreira, who arrived later.

“I kept the first one, which I love, although now I do not play, and yes Lucas.”

And all this goal-scoring prowess has clearly impacted Arsenal’s form in the Premier League as the London outfit find themselves in the fifth spot – eight points behind league leaders Manchester City.
