Stamford Bridge Chelsea

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea Football Club back in 2003 following which the Blues have had a change of fortune.

Abramovich has pumped in large sums of money into the club thanks to which the Stamford Bridge outfit have won multiple Premier League titles, the Europa League and also the Champions League.

But now according to a new book, Roman Abramovich initially wanted to buy Arsenal and not Chelsea.

Yes, as hard as it may be to digest but the Russian businessman could have the owner of the Gunners had it not been for Swiss bank UBS.

As per the new book, The Club, Abramovich had chosen the Swiss bank to analyse the economics of English top-flight clubs back in 2003.

And UBS had then reported that Arsenal were not up for sale following which the Russian went on to buy Chelsea for £140 million.

But as per the two American journalists who wrote the book, the then Arsenal owners would have sold the club to Roman Abramovich had the businessman made an offer.

Just when Roman Abramovich was in the process of buying Chelsea, Arsenal were going through their final glory days in the Premier League.

Abramovich brought in Jose Mourinho as Chelsea’s manager after which the Blues became the next team who would be involved in an on-field tussle with Manchester United.

And since then, the Gunners have failed to win the Premier League and this year they even failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Since 2003, Chelsea have won five FA Cups, two Community Shields, one Champions League, one Europa League and five Premier Leagues.

On the other hand, Arsenal Football Club have failed to win a single Premier League title during the past 15 years.
