Argentina continued their embarrassing form to the World Cup after they went down to Croatia 3-0 on Thursday and now there are serious doubts over their qualification to the knockout stages.
The South American side went 1-0 down thanks to a silly error from Willy Caballero after which it was Modric who put the game behind Lionel Messi and co courtesy a wonder strike from outside the box.
As if 2-0 was not enough the Europeans rubbed salt to the wounds by adding a third goal in injury time.
With only one point from the first two group games, there’s a huge possibility that Argentina might not progress beyond the group stages.
So we decided to take a look at how the other teams in Group D have to perform in order for Argentina to progress.
1. Scenario 1: If Nigeria beat Iceland
If Nigeria beat Iceland today then, Argentina and Iceland will be tied with the same number of points. In such a scenario, Argentina will have to win their final group game against Nigeria on the other hand, Iceland will have to lose against Croatia.
If both Iceland and Argentina win their final group game then it will be down to goal difference.
2. Scenario 2: If Nigeria and Iceland draw
If Nigeria and Iceland manage to play out a draw then both these teams, as well as Argentina, will have a chance to progress to the knockout stages. Goal difference will play a big factor in such a scenario.
3. Scenario 3: If Iceland beat Nigeria
If Iceland beat Nigeria today then they will need only one point against Croatia in order to secure qualification. In such a case, Argentina’s result from the final home game will hold no importance.
