The 2018 World Cup is onto its conclusive leg of the journey with only two games left to be played – the third place play-off and then the final.
The tournament have truly been a tournament of upsets with a number of big teams crashing out early on but FIFA will most certainly be very happy with how the games have been organized.
Before the World Cup began there was a lot of talk about foul play and match-fixing especially since the tournament was being hosted in Russia.
But now the governing body of football in the world can hold its head up high – atleast in one department.
FIFA have announced that there have been no positive drug tests during the 2018 World Cup up until now.
FIFA have confirmed that they have collected a total of 626 samples since the tournament started almost a month back and these samples include specimens of blood, urine and serum.
62 games out of the stipulated 64 games have already been played meaning the body on average tested more than eight players per game which is double than what is actually required.
The governing body has also confirmed that out of the 626 samples collected – 108 of them have been on non-matchdays.
But one information that FIFA have not yet provided is that how many samples have been collected from the Russian World Cup squad.
FIFA said: “As the 2018 Fifa World Cup draws to a close, Fifa can today announce that, so far, the analyses of all doping tests conducted before and during the competition have yielded negative results.
“The testing programme in place this year was the largest ever conducted for a FIFA World Cup.”
The results though should not come as a huge surprise given the fact that the last player to fail a drug test during the World Cup was Diego Maradona way back in 1994.
