David Luiz Arsenal

David Luiz is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of this season and after his horrible performance vs Man City on Wednesday, everyone’s certain the Gunners will not hold onto him any longer.

The defender’s agent has told talkSPORT that Arsenal will make a final call regarding Luiz’s future by the end of this week and there’s a high chance the Brazilian could be shown the door.

“The contract situation has dragged on not because of any reason, not because of the will of either Arsenal or David to finalise, but really because of the situation that occurred with this pandemic,” he told talkSPORT.

“Now it becomes a moment where you’ve got 14 days left [until the deadline] and you’re at a critical point of your career, where you’d probably three or four years left at the very top level, so that’s obviously at the back of your mind.

“What I can tell you is the situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week. The 22nd June is the deadline for most of the clubs to finish the season and beyond, irrespective of any situation or not.”

Will Arsenal hold onto David Luiz for one more year?

Despite such a golden chance of offloading David Luiz, Jamie Carragher fears that Mikel Arteta could walk the other way and hold onto the centre-back for one more season.

“People keep talking about experience, sometimes it’s one of the most overrated qualities,” Carragher told Sky Sports, as quoted by Mirror.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are. David Luiz is not good enough for Arsenal. They’ve got a young French lad coming in next season, they’ve bought Mari, they need another one because they’ve still got Sokratis. Mustafi played tonight. These are not good enough. The problem with someone like a David Luiz, you think you’ll do this and do that and get the best out of him. You won’t.

“People at the top of the club, if they are deciding that David Luiz is not getting this year extended that is right. If Mikel Arteta thinks he should get that year I think that’s wrong. I’d be really worried as an Arsenal fan if Mikel Arteta felt David Luiz should get another year at Arsenal. I’d be worried if he was my manager.”

It’s a no-brainer that Arsenal should be parting ways with Luiz as soon as possible but if Mikel Arteta’s comments are anything to go by then the manager could take a totally different call.

The manager said after the match: “I don’t know what will happen with his contract. I know what happened today, I know the way that David reacted. I know him well, not only as a player but as a person as well.

“He can handle these situations and it was a reason why I didn’t select him from the start and he had to play because Pablo got injured. He is always going to try to give you his best with the condition that he’s at and he’s tried again, but it didn’t work out for him or the team. That’s it.”

Obviously Arteta will not lay blame on one of his star players publicly but many pundits including Jamie Carragher are fearful that the Gunners boss could hold onto the Brazilian beyond the summer primarily to use his experience inside the dressing room.
