Dries Mertens Napoli to Chelsea
Dries Mertens Napoli

Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Napoli forward Dries Mertens who is set to become a free agent in the summer.

Mertens has been with Napoli since 2013 and his current deal with the club expires in the summer. And at the start of the season, it was more or less certain the 32-year-old would be getting a new deal at the club.

Now though it seems like the talks between the two parties have broken down as Napoli are not too keen to give him a new deal due to the financial crisis amidst the pandemic meaning the forward is now set to leave as a free agent.

And even though he is 32 years old, a number of clubs have now shown interest in signing him in the summer and Premier League side Manchester United are part of that list.

Some experts had claimed that United have a very good chance of convincing Dries Mertens to move to Old Trafford in the summer but now those hopes could be pulverised as Inter Milan seem to be interested in the forward.

Mertens has been in Italy for a really long time and Antonio Conte is trying to use this to his advantage and lure him in as a long-term replacement to Lautaro Martinez who looks all set to move out at the end of the season.

Is Dries Mertens actually needed at Man United?

Inter Milan joining the transfer race is a big blow for Manchester United since the player has already scored six and assisted five goals in the Serie A this season.

But we don’t think Solskjaer will be too worried about this news since Dries Mertens was never at the top of his transfer list.

Man United are already in talks with Odion Ighalo over a permanent deal while they still remain in the hunt to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.

So in such a scenario, the OT outfit will not be paying too much attention to what happens with Dries Mertens over the next couple of days and this could be great news for Inter Milan and the other interested parties.

There’s every chance that Man United are going offer a permanent contract to Odion Ighalo who seems to have impressed his new manager and right now, Ole would happily accept the services of a 30-year-old instead of a player who is two years older than him.
