Argentina were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Iceland in their opening game of the World Cup and much like any other game, most of the blame fell on captain Lionel Messi.
In all fairness to the critics, Messi did miss a penalty during the game but the amount of negative comments that the Barcelona man has received is way over the top.
The Argentine though was quick to come out and claim that the loss of points was because of him and he takes full responsibility for Argentina’s performance. But since then former players like Maradona have come in support of the player.
And now Lionel Messi’s mother Celia Cuccittini has revealed the level of suffering and trauma that his son goes through whenever he cannot give his best for the national team.
“His aim is to bring the Cup home, to win the World Cup,” Cuccittini said in an appearance on El Trece television show “Diario de Mariana.”(as reported by ESPN)
“It’s one of his biggest desires. We see him suffer and cry at times.
“He is the first who wants to bring the Cup with him. He more than anyone would give everything for this to be his World Cup.”
“We suffer from all the criticism that Leo receives,” Cuccittini added.
“When people say that he doesn’t feel it or that he plays for the national team out of obligation, that hurts as a mother and as a family.
“Luckily, people love him a lot and they transmit that to him and he values this a lot. As a mother, I do, too.”
Lionel Messi’s mother also added the fact that his son does not only have talents on the pitch.
“Leo is a divine son, a beautiful brother, a better father and an incredible husband,” she said.
“I love my four children, but I would give anything for this to be his World Cup.”
A couple of days back former Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra had claimed that unlike Cristiano Ronaldo who thrives under pressure, Lionel Messi seems to crumble under it. And now it is the Argentine’s mother who has revealed how affected his son is because of his team’s poor start to the World Cup.
And all these points just makes you think, is Lionel Messi really the GOAT?
