Manchester United are currently looking to appoint a technical director and the name of Mike Phelan keeps popping up every now and then.

Mike Phelan returned back to the United dugout along with Solskjaer at the end of 2018 and he was supposed to be part of the caretaker team until the end of the season.

While Ole has already been given the permanent job at the club but the future of Mike Phelan still hangs in the balance.

Before returning back to Old Trafford, Mike Phelan was the sporting director of A-League side Central Coast Mariners.

Initially, Phelan was scheduled to return back to Australia at the end of the current season but the A-League have claimed that they are yet to receive any clarification on the future of their sporting director.

A spokesperson for the Mariners told the Manchester Evening News(via Sky Sports): “We are eager to have Mike continue on with the club but at the moment we are at the mercy of waiting to see what the future holds for Mike and United.

“We are still in constant dialogue with Mike, who has been fantastic, keeping us updated every step of the way.

“He’s fond of the Mariners, we’re fond of Mike, so hopefully, he can continue his role with the academy.”

Reports claim that Ed Woodward is keen to appoint Rio Ferdinand as the new technical director at the club and the pair have also had a series of meetings during the past couple of weeks.

But it looks like the Man United manager has pitched the name of Mike Phelan for the job.

Solskjaer feels Mike Phelan is the right man for the job since he knows the club structure very well having worked alongside Ferguson for a number of years.

It still remains to be seen what Phelan will decide but whatever be the decision, United have to sort it out before the players return for their pre-season training camp.
