During the past couple of days, there has been a fair bit of talk surrounding Rangers’ January signing Jermain Defoe.
It all started when the former England international played against St Mirren this past weekend and came out with a goal in the game.
Jermain Defoe also won a penalty and this penalty has been subject to many a debate.
Many pundits and fans feel that the loanee had gone down too easily and it was actually not a penalty.
And then Steve Clarke came out with an even harsher comment saying that if Jermain Defoe is found guilty of diving then he should be slapped with a retrospective ban.
This comment though has not gone down too well with the Rangers boss who has come out in defence of his new signing.
“I was very surprised by Steve’s comments, first and foremost because it’s got absolutely nothing to do with Steve Clarke or Kilmarnock,” Gerrard said on Tuesday.
“We didn’t punish Jordan Jones, we didn’t give the Kilmarnock player a two-game ban, so why he’s trying to get one of my players banned, is a surprise and a disappointment.
“Because that’s not the type of guy I know Steve Clarke for.
“He is usually first class, the dealings I had with him as a player when he used to coach me, and since I’ve been at Rangers.
“So very surprised by his comments and I don’t think there’s any need for them at all.”
Jermain Defoe has surely added another dimension to the Rangers attack ever since his move from the Premier League and the 36-year-old has already managed to rack up two goals and two assists in the same amount of games for the Teddy Bears.
