Joe Aribo has been in fine form for Charlton Athletic this past season and he is more or less set to move to the Premiership during the summer transfer window.

Charlton Athletic have been trying hard to keep the player at the club next season but with the likes of Rangers and Celtic interested in him, there is very little chance that he will stay in England.

While a move to Glasgow might seem a lucrative one but Charlton’s head of recruitment, Steve Gallen has warned Joe Aribo not to join either of the two Old Firm clubs.

“We really hope he doesn’t go. But if Joe does decide to go then we’d really like him to go English, for a couple of reasons,” Gallen said.

“One, because that is the best place for him to go to – the best place to develop his career. And two, because if he did go to a club in England then our club would get recompensed.

“We would get a fair valuation of his worth. If he goes cross-border then the club won’t.”

Up until now, it was being reported that Rangers were the favourites to sign Joe Aribo as the club were willing to pay the midfielder £20k-a-week in the form of wages if he chooses to move to Ibrox this summer.

But this week Football Insider had claimed that Celtic had made contact with the youngster’s representatives.

Football Insider reported, “The Scottish treble winners have contacted the representatives of the 22-year-old in the last 48 hours as they look to beat their bitter rivals to his signature.”

Rangers though have quickly come to realise that this interest from Celtic is very real and they have reportedly upped their stakes in order to bring Joe Aribo on board.

£20k-a-week will have made Joe Aribo one of the highest paid players in the current Rangers squad but Steven Gerrard is not too keen to stop here.

Initially, it was expected that the midfielder would be handed a two-year deal but it looks like Rangers are now willing to offer him a four-year deal which means he could earn up to £4 million in case he chooses to stay the full length of the deal.
