Liverpool started the 2018-19 season with Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk as their central defensive pairing and to be honest made people had doubts with this pair.

One was a big money signing while the other one was a young lad who had not proved anything yet.

But it seems the gamble taken by Jurgen Klopp has paid off.

Virgil Van Dijk is easily the best central defender in world football right now and while Joe Gomez is currently recovering from an ankle surgery, the youngster too had a fine first half of the season.

And while speaking about the prospect of Joe Gomez, Sky Sports pundit Ian Dowie has claimed the 21-year-old is capable of making the heights of his defensive partner Van Dijk.

“How good can Gomez be at Liverpool?” Dowie told Soccer Saturday.

“Playing alongside the best centre-half as we speak, I suggest or one of them in Van Dijk. And he’s probably quicker than Van Dijk when he gets it.

“But he needs to play [in order to get into the England squad].”

Joe Gomez played 13 games in the Premier League this season before he picked up an ankle injury and while he was expected to return back to action in early February but that though eventually did not happen.

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Joe Gomez needed surgery on his knee and current reports suggest that he should be able to make it to the bench when Spurs visit Anfield at the end of this month.

In the absence of Gomez, both Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have done a fantastic job in shouldering the response with Van Dijk which means, the youngster will have to fight his way back into the first XI.

But one thing we can surely say is that Van Dijk along with Joe Gomez will be the centre-back pairing at Liverpool for years to come.
