Last season, Liverpool were one of the strongest attacking sides in Europe but it was their defence that let them down each time.

This campaign though everything has changed especially with Van Dijk and Joe Gomez at the heart of the back line.

But then Joe Gomez injured his leg early in December and the club reported that he would be out for two months.

This meant that the youngster would return back to action late in January.

Then once again the manager provided an update claiming that the player is still recovering and it might take him a bit longer to return back to full fitness.

This meant that Joe Gomez would not be able to face West Ham United and also miss out Liverpool’s Champions League clash vs Bayern Munich at Anfield.

And now the manager has claimed that Joe Gomez might also require surgery on his broken leg.

“It is possible, probably,” the manager said talking about a probable surgery.

“It is not exactly going how we want – that’s how it is. He needs more time. We cannot say more.”

This is a huge blow for Liverpool more so since Dejan Lovren has also been ruled out of the West Ham United with a hamstring injury.

As things stand it will be Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip who will play in central defence for the next couple of games and now we have to wait on reports as to whether Joe Gomez’s leg will actually be operated on.

If surgery is required then Joe Gomez might not return back to full fitness before the month of March.
