Arsenal are set to release midfielder Aaron Ramsey sometime next year and Unai Emery is currently busy trying to bring in a replacement for the Welsh international.

Ramsey is out of contract at the end of the season meaning the Gunners need to offload him during the January window if they wish to cash in on his sale.

And they also have to bring in a replacement for Ramsey in order to cover up the void left by him.

For the longest time, Arsenal were said to be the frontrunners in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl and many reports claimed that the 23-year-old will move out of BVB at the start of the new year.

But now it seems, Julian Weigl will stay put in the Bundesliga after Lucien Favre made it clear that the midfielder is key to his plans during the current season.

“In midfield, we have Witsel, Delaney, Weigl and Dahoud: all four are indispensable for our project,” Favre said.

This statement will surely be a huge blow for Unai Emery who was planning to launch a bid for the dynamic midfielder at the start of the new year.

Weigl was a key figure for Dortmund last season having made 25 appearances in the Bundesliga but this year he has fallen down the pecking order having managed to play just 3 games in the league.

Arsenal have a strong connection with BVB and they also have a number of players in their current squad who have played for the German side before and Unai Emery was planning to use this relationship in trying to lure Julian Weigl to the Emirates.

But now that Lucien Favre has made it clear that the midfielder is not going anywhere up until the end of the season, it might be time for the Arsenal boss to look for an alternate solution.
