Rangers FC are moving closer to their first signing of the January transfer window and reports suggest the move could happen as early as January 1st.

The Gers plan to bring in as many as four new players during the start of the new year and one of them will be an attacking midfielder in order to replace Ovie Ejaria who has cut his loan spell short and headed back to Liverpool.

And the man who looks set to replace Ejaria is Everton youngster Kieran Dowell.

According to Four Lads Had a Dream, Steven Gerrard is planning to make Kieran Dowell his first signing of the winter window.

“It’s easy to see why the manager is looking to add Kieran Dowell and is his number one immediate target for January,” Four Lads said.

“The Everton England under 21 international has been pinpointed as the man to replace Ovie Ejaria who cut his loan short and returned to Merseyside.

“Dowell is a natural number 10, more attacking than Ovie naturally was and perhaps almost more significantly loves a shot from outside the area. Exactly what the squad are missing and require. Rangers have already been in discussions over this so it will be interesting to see if any deal can be done.”

The Everton man plays primarily down the middle of the pitch but can also be deployed on either the left or the right which is the exact kind of versatility that the Rangers manager is looking for.

Kieran Dowell is an Everton youth product but so far he has managed to play just two games in the Premier League during his four-season stay with the senior side.

This season, Kieran Dowell is yet to feature for Everton in the Premier League and all his appearances have either come in cup ties or in the Premier League 2.
