Chelsea have reportedly opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz and will also hold talks with his parent club in the coming few days, according to transfer expert Nicolo Schira.

He wrote on Twitter: “Chelsea want Kai Havertz and are in talks with his agent. Blues are ready to offer 5-year contract (€8M/year) and in the next days will open talks with Bayer Leverkusen. At the moment Marina Granovskaia lead the race for the german player.”

Kai Havertz is one of the most sought-after youngsters in world football right now and as per various reports in Germany, Leverkusen want somewhere around £85 to 90 million for the sale of the 21-year-old.

And while the Blues are in pole position to land the attacking midfielder in the summer but according to Dean Ashton, the youngster is way too overpriced.

“That would be incredible if it was to come off [the Havertz transfer]. Obviously he’s a wonderful talent and I’m sure he would fit in the system that Frank Lampard wants to play,” the former West Ham striker told Sky Sports.

“But if he were to come in, I think there would be some big casualties that would have to leave Chelsea. £90M for me, that’s way overpriced!

“I think he’s been fantastic, but he’s still in the infancy of his career. As such, I would not be spending that much money on him at the moment.

“But if the price were to come down, I think for any of the top sides, he’s a superb talent to bring into your club.”

Yes, paying £90 million for one player right after such a massive lockdown is really not great but Chelsea did not sign any new players during the past two transfer windows so they clearly have money to spare.

Also, the Blues might not have to dig deep into their own pockets since they still have money left from the sale of Eden Hazard and there’s also a fair bit of money that’s expected to come in from the sale of some of their current players.
