Chelsea have been strongly linked with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz but there was a time when Manchester United were said to be the frontrunners in signing the youngster.

The 21-year-old is easily one of the most sought-after youngsters in European football this summer and a number of big clubs want to bring him on board, which included Manchester United as well.

But now as per a report, the Man United hierarchy decided to back out of the deal eventually and let Chelsea lead the race due to one major concern.

The report cites The Athletic by saying: “Manchester United have pulled out of the race to sign Kai Havertz after being put off by Bayer Leverkusen’s £90million valuation of the player.

“Havertz, 21, is attracting plenty of attention in European football after producing a number of impressive displays in the middle of the park for Leverkusen.

“Reports suggest the Germany international is on his way to Chelsea this summer, although the likes of United, Real Madrid and Liverpool have also been linked with a move.

“Yet according to The Athletic, United board members Matt Judge and Ed Woodward decided against signing him because of Leverkusen’s steep asking price.”

Man United have already spent money on Bruno Fernandes in January so we can understand why the club are not too interested in signing someone like Kai Havertz.

But clearly, United’s loss is Chelsea’s gain since transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Premier League side have started talks with Bayer Leverkusen and that the move is only a matter of time.

Chelsea have already gotten their hands on Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and if they can add Kai Havertz into the mix then Frank Lampard will surely have a strong enough squad to challenge for the league title next season.

Man United, on the other hand, are prioritising a move for Jadon Sancho and as per rumours, their first bid has already been rejected.
