Wolves almost managed to inflict Liverpool’s first defeat of the season but it was Roberto Firmino who saved Jurgen Klopp’s blushes.
The Reds took the lead early on in the match via Jordan Henderson but in the second half Wolves pumped up the gears and for the first time in ages, Liverpool did not know how to respond.
Adama Traore ran at Andy Robertson with pace and venom and the Scottish international for the first time looked to be confused and maybe a bit scared.
Wolves did manage to level things up and for the longest part in the second half it seemed like Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were about to pick up a win against Liverpool.
But Roberto Firmino scored a beautiful goal in the 84th minute to help secure all three points.
And speaking after the match, Jurgen Klopp was quick to acknowledge that Wolves are completely different teams from what Liverpool have faced all throughout the year.
“We knew it would be a really tough game. Wolves are doing so unbelievably well and are so different from everything else you face during a year,” he said.
“How Nuno sets them up is really good. They now have (Romain) Saiss and (Leander) Dendoncker in there, where (Ryan) Bennett and (Willy) Boly played.
“And Traore is pretty much unplayable. I’ve said it a couple of times and it’s still true. They scored a goal, a super goal. It makes it so difficult, the way they defend. And each ball you lose is a counter-attack.”
Wolves have so far managed to lose only six matches in the Premier League which is a staggering feat and given how congested the middle of the league table is right now, they have a great chance of finishing in the top-four this season.
And as for Liverpool, Wolves surely opened up a lot of cracks Jurgen Klopp’s side on Thursday and the biggest one was the dip in form for Andy Robertson.
