Premier League side Leicester City are interested in signing Celtic’s 22-year-old central defender Kristoffer Ajer – as per reports.
Ajer joined the Hoops from Norwegian side IK Start in 2016 and since then he has turned himself into one of the most important players at Park Head. This season the defender has played in 28 Premiership games, scoring three goals and two assists.
Brendan Rodgers is currently in charge of Leicester City and the manager seems to be eager to reunite with Kristoffer Ajer before the upcoming season.
And as per Noel Whelan, the Foxes might be ready to shell out a good amount of money in order to get hold of the 22-year-old.
Whelan told Football Insider: “If he is contracted they can set their price. £20million is not that much when you think about the going price of players these days.
“If Brendan Rodgers wants him badly enough then £20million will become available. If Soyuncu goes in another direction then there will be a lot of money available because Soyuncu will probably command £60million.
“I am sure if Rodgers wants him badly enough he will have the money and resources.”
Ajer still has two years left on his current deal with the Bhoys meaning Neil Lennon would want to hold onto him for one more season but if Leicester are actually serious about paying £20 odd million for the defender, there’s no way the Scottish club will hold him back.
Scottish clubs have a price tag for each one of their players and Celtic paid just £540,000 for the services of Kristoffer Ajer four years back. So naturally, a £20million selling fee is a no brainer for Neil Lennon and his think tank.
Leicester City though will surely look to bring this asking price down since they are one of the toughest negotiators in the Premier League. But, at the same time, Rodgers will not shy away from spending big as they still have plenty of funds left from the Harry Maguire transfer.
