Dries Mertens

Chelsea badly need a new centre-forward for the 2020-21 season and it looks like Napoli’s Dries Mertens is going to be that man.

Mertens is set to be a free agent in the summer as Napoli are not expected to offer him a new deal and a host of top European clubs are ready to pounce on the 32-year-old.

The player might be 32-years-old but this season he’s scored six and assisted five goals in 21 Serie A matches which is why he could be the perfect partner to Tammy Abraham.

Chelsea could sell off both Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi this summer so Dries Mertens is a much-needed transfer Lampard needs to make.

And in a bid to do just that, the Chelsea boss is reportedly calling up the player every day to try and convince him to join the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Sports Mole are reporting: “Italian transfer expert Vincenzo Morabito has suggested that Chelsea may be leading the way.

“Morabito told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli that Lampard is calling the Belgium international almost every day in an attempt to ensure that his side see off competition from other clubs.”

This just goes on to show just how badly Chelsea need a new centre-forward and it looks like Lampard has set his sights on Mertens for the time being.

The Blues are still chasing Timo Werner but the Leipzig man is very much inclined to join Liverpool next season and clearly, Lampard’s not sitting with folded hands.

It’s still not sure if Chelsea will be able to get their hands on Dries Mertens since a number of other clubs are also in the race. But it’s safe to say that it’s Chelsea who are showing the most interest.
