Liverpool successfully kept Spurs at bay during the UCL final which meant the Reds have now picked up their sixth Champions League trophy.

And this was very much needed after what the club had suffered during last season’s final vs Real Madrid.

Obviously, the defence was a major issue for the Reds last campaign but this time around with Virgil Van Dijk leading the backline everything looks to be in cruise control.

Virgil Van Dijk was once again sensational during the final and keeping a clean sheet meant that no player has managed to dribble past the Dutch international during the whole of the 2018-19 season.

The centre-back has featured in each and every Premier League game this season for the Reds and has played in 12 Champions League games too.

Virgil Van Dijk is without a doubt the best central defender in Europe right now and since he has just managed to lift the Champions League trophy, many people think that he is favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.

Virgil Van Dijk though thinks that there is another player who deserves to win it more than him.

“I think Lionel Messi is the best player in the world. He should win the Ballon d’Or,” he said.

“So I’m not thinking of that. But if I win, I’ll take it. Messi should win it though. He is the best in the world, whether he’s in the final or not.

“We should be hungry. This season finished today with the Champions League,” he added.

“In July everyone starts at zero and we go again. We saw this season that we still have to build on it.

“We need to challenge Manchester City again because I don’t think they’re going anywhere. We are ambitious and we want these type of nights a couple of times a year.
