Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-1 at home last Sunday and with that Jurgen Klopp’s men consolidated their spot on top of the Premier League table.

The Reds were by far the better team during the match as they managed to make 36 efforts on goal compared to Man United’s six.

Sadio Mane scored the first goal for Liverpool and then it was the Xherdan Shaqiri show as the Swiss came off the bench to score a brace.

But sandwiched between these was a goal from Jesse Lingard courtesy of a rare attack from Manchester United.

Jesse Lingard put the ball in the back of the net which brought the Red Devils back into the game at 1-1 but that goal was primarily a mistake from Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker who failed to gather a rather simple cross.

Alisson spilled the ball which landed straight at the feet of Jesse Lingard and no one inside the stadium was more disgusted that Virgil Van Dijk.

And here’s what Van Dijk told Alisson Necker after the game.

Virgil Van Dijk told Liverpool’s official website: ‘I said to him, “We have no clean sheet because of you! Why did you ruin the clean sheet?”‘

‘I made a joke out of it,’ said van Dijk. ‘He’s been fantastic for us. It happens, everyone makes mistakes.’

‘You see it a lot… maybe I didn’t react as well as maybe I could have. It happens sometimes. We had to all bounce back and we did.

‘It was very important to win. You could say it was just another game but it was a bit special because it was against them.

‘It had been a long time since we beat them at home and it was well deserved.’

With the win over Manchester United, Liverpool have maintained their position on top of the league table with a one-point lead over defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool have two easy games next up against Wolves and Newcastle United respectively after which they take on Arsenal at home and then visit the Etihad in the new year to take on Manchester City.
