Celtic and Rangers had both been scouting Montpellier youngster Thomas Robert for some time now. But it looks like the player could be on his way to Newcastle United – as per reports.

The winger currently plays for the Montpellier B side but is set to be a free agent in the summer which is why so many clubs are interested to bring him on board for the upcoming season.

The youngster’s father, Laurent Robert played for the Magpies from 2001 and 2005 and now as per his agent, the 19-year-old could follow on his father’s footsteps.

“There has been a number of clubs who have expressed an interest in Thomas and being on a free transfer makes him even more in demand,” McKay told Football Insider.

“We helped move his dad Laurent to Newcastle for over £10m and if Thomas is half as good as his dad he will prove to be a bargain for someone this summer.”

Will Newcastle United beat Celtic & Rangers in the transfer race?

Despite the heavy interest from Newcastle United, Celtic and Rangers still had hope of signing the youngster since, at either of these two clubs, Thomas would be getting guaranteed game time whereas in England he will surely be a bench warmer.

But as per the Chronicle, the Parisian born lad is keen to snub the Scottish giants and make a move to the English Premier League in order to join Newcastle United.

A source close to the Robert family told ChronicleLive: “They are hoping Newcastle will take a look at this opportunity.

“Laurent was a real favourite at the club but a chance to develop at Newcastle would be the initial aim for Thomas.”

This is seriously a massive blow for both the Old Firm clubs since Thomas has really impressed during his outings in the UEFA Youth League this season and they were hoping to sign such a fine talent for free.

But now with Newcastle entering the race, it will be next to impossible for the SPFL clubs to lure the youngster in.
